Gay Kootenays Okanagan

Kootenay Pride

Kootenay Pride is a very grass roots LGBT community which has involvement from all sectors of our LGBT community. We organize an annual Pride Celebration, which we're quite sure is the largest small town Pride any place, and probably one of Canada's coolest!  In addition we try to keep the Pride community running year round with activities and get togethers, from small coffee shop meetings, to community town hall meetings, to "meet 'n greet" dances. We have at least one major dance every few months. Our Kootenay Pride Valentines dances are generally the largest event happening in the whole area on that night.

While we're proud of our success, it's not what we do but why we do it that's important. Our group donates over $5000 every year to seriously important charities. The Nelson Food Cupboard (a food bank), Ankors (the Kootenay's HIV/AIDS centres), Transconnect (Transconnect website gone May 22,2013)(and organization supporting individuals who are trans identified), and many others have received our support and continue to
receive funds either directly from proceeds of dances, or from our annual disbursements after Pride Celebrations.

Our goal is to continue to raise awareness and support the diverse and tolerant society we have grown to cherish in the West Kootenays. Our community boasts one of the only safe rural spaces for LGBT culture on the planet and we're here to help it continue, flourish, and "give back" to our community at large. Pride here, is as much a "thank-you" you Nelson and the West Kootenay as it is activism and an outward expression of Pride in ourselves.

Kootenay Pride's Parade has been in operation for over 16 years. Our parade and celebration is the longest continuous parade (currently Nelson's only parade) in Nelson, and we think it represents inclusion in the community as a whole, and our march is one of the "Celebrations" for the achievement of a Harmonious West Kootenay that includes LGBT people in nearly every way. We march for our history (for there were struggles), for our present (for there still are struggles we endure as individuals and as a group despite general inclusion), and for the future (for the hope that we never return
to intolerance and bigotry).
